Thought to be one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, the Izumo-taisha, or Izumo Grand Shrine, has a recorded history stretching back to the year 950. Declared a national treasure of Japan in 1952, the shrine's interior ceiling paintings have served as the inspiration for the motif on this pen and the others in the series.

Each pen is hand-turned from ebonite hard rubber and then hand-finished in urushi lacquer and precious materials by skilled artisans in the traditional craft center of Wajima on the west coast of Japan. The solid gold nibs are produced by skilled technicians at the Platinum nib factory just outside Tokyo in a time-intensive process requiring over twenty steps for each individual nib.

Our optional nib customizations can add to the flair and distinctiveness of your writing on the page and can also make this pen a treasured and valuable tool for the professional or amateur calligrapher.

The Izumo can be filled with any bottled fountain pen ink when utilizing the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand disposable ink cartridges. The pen ships along with a traditionally-styled wooden presentation box and includes a starter ink cartridge and fabric pen wrap.
