The depiction of a waterfall in a mountain gorge is a common theme in Japanese art - the motif suggests the transient, ever-changing impermanence of the flowing water in contrast to the solid changelessness of the rocky mountain surface. The motif is realized here in painstaking Taka Maki-e technique with ample use of gold dust and other precious materials.
