The darker grey areas on the cap ends and gripping section serve to accent the soft semi-translucent purple of the rest of the cap and barrel. The grey in the gripping section also serves to obscure the tiny ink droplets that tend to accumulate in the inner sections of demonstrator pens.
Note that this particular fountain pen has a sticker with the nib's tipping size on it - in this case a standard rigid Medium. Not all pens will have this sticker, and it is easily removable in any case.
The Pilot Custom 74 Violet fountain pen features a solid gold 14k rhodium-plated nib.

The Custom 74 utilizes Pilot's high-capacity CON-70 converter, which allows for filling with any bottled fountain pen ink. Convenient Pilot-Namiki cartridges are also available.
