One of the Four Heavenly Kings of Buddhism, Bishamon-ten, also known as Tamon-ten, is revered as a bestower of competitive advantage and steady progress, but originated as a warrior god during Japan's warring states period from 1467 to 1600.

The motif on this pen, created by Maki-e artist and Kokkokai Collective member Masaru Hayashi, who signs himself as Masaru, depicts Bishamon-ten and the cloudy nimbus surrounding him as he overcomes an evil demon while holding a halberd in one hand and a stupa in the other.
