Namiki Nippon Art Golden Pheasant
The Nippon Art Collection Golden Pheasant offers an affordable introduction to the world of Maki-e pens. This hand-finished pen utilizes Hira-maki-e technique, in which gold dust and other metallic powders are sprinkled onto rich dark lacquer.
The Nippon Art Golden Pheasant captures the sudden flurry of a pair of pheasants at take off. The background is filled with a flutter of heart-shaped particles raised by the beating wings.
The silver pheasant seen on the cap is pointed down, with its long tapered tail feathers spread out around the cap. The pheasant on the barrel, which we see as the male, is rising up. He is a much more colorful bird and we assume is rising to meet the female on the cap. Because the cap and barrel have a single start thread, the two birds always align beak to beak when the cap is screwed onto the barrel. The effect is one of motion, an instant of surprise and a meeting of winged creatures.
Each of these pens exploits the Hira-maki-e technique, a process where very fine gold dust and pigment is sprinkled over wet lacquer. The deep black lacquer background forms a base for these applied colors.
Namiki 14k gold nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, or Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
