Tsumugi finish emulates the appearance of a traditional Japanese silk weaving fabric. The result is a pen with a remarkable multi-faceted surface. Deviating from its usual color naming conventions, Nakaya instead uses the colors associated with this weaving process for these pens - Kuro-tamenuri  is Kasuri (絣), Aka-tamenuri is Hanashabi (花菱), Heki-tamenuri is Amime (網目), and Toki-tamenuri is Asanoha (麻の葉).

Each Nakaya pen is hand-turned at the Nakaya workshop in Tokyo from natural ebonite hard rubber which is sustainably harvested from the wild rubber gum tree. Hand-finishing in natural urushi lacquer, itself refined from sap of the Japanese lacquer tree, is then accomplished by skilled artisans in the traditional craft center of Wajima on the west coast of Japan. After final assembly and inspection in Tokyo, the pen arrives at our workshop for nib setting and tuning and for customizations if requested.

Nakaya pens can fill using any standard fountain pen ink when fitted with the easy to use converter, provided by us free of charge with your purchase. Consult our bottled ink offerings for a wide variety of inks we can recommend. The pen can also fill using convenient disposable Platinum brand ink cartridges.

Each Nakaya pen ships in a special paulownia softwood presentation box decorated with kanji-style script. A fabric pen kimono and starter pack of Platinum ink cartridges are included along with the converter. We are an authorized Nakaya dealer.
