Nakaya Portable Cigar Metal Thread Heki-tamenuri
If you have always enjoyed Nakaya's ebonite and urushi fountain pens, but would prefer a writing instrument with a bit more heft than these provide, the new Metal Thread in Heki-tamenuri may be the pen for you.
Dressed in brownish-green tamenuri and a smooth, slender shape, the Portable Cigar in Heki-tamenuri is one of the classic Nakaya pen designs. The curving expanse of the Portable size showcases the layered Heki-tamenuri finish.
As with all hand-painted Tame-nuri pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same. With time, the outer dark layer will grow more transparent, allowing the Heki under-layer to show through.
Note the metal threading at the front of the barrel - this, and the $100 reduction in the price, is the only difference between these Metal Thread pens and the traditional all-ebonite versions of these pens.
This Nakaya fountain pen is made of naturally harvested ebonite hard rubber which has been hand-turned and then is meticulously coated with urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the yrushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen requires a minimum of three months to complete.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex - see our nib customizations page for more information.
