Nakaya 17mm Portable Cigar Blue Rose with Raden
Raden is a Maki-e technique which utilizes natural shell material combined with Urushi lacquer finishing. Nakaya most often uses abalone shell for its blue hues and bright reflective surfaces, in this case over a layered Heki-tamenuri finish.

This very simple design employs tiny pieces of raden (blue abalone shell) to depict the petals of the rose. Small green pieces of raden are also used to represent leaves. A scattering of petals and leaves seem to fall from the rose down around the barrel, demonstrating the fleeting nature of this bloom.

This pen comes from a famous Urushi lacquer works in Wajima, on the West Coast of Japan.

Hand-painted Maki-e converters are available.
