Nakaya Portable Cigar Ashi
The wind blowing through a bamboo grove inspires the motif on this beautiful pen. Maki-e, literally "sprinkled powder," is a general term for the process by which figurative or abstract designs are created by sprinkling pigment or metallic powder onto the surface of Urushi lacquer while it is still wet. There are many varieties of Maki-e, and this version with the Ashi design is an intricate example of the time-intensive artistry.

Gold urushi powder is used in the reed design, which defines details down to the level of individual fronds and leaflets.
Note the subtle detail used to create black reeds set against a black background. This pen is a quiet masterwork and an extraordinary example of breathtakingly understated surface design.
We are particularly attracted to the designs on this pen. It winds around the barrel and cap in such a way that one wants to hold and turn it in your fingers. The reeds are made with razor crisp detail including the center shaft of each leaf.
