Nakaya Portable Cigar Ascending Dragon Heki-tamenuri
In Tame-Sukashi technique, layers of clear, smooth Urushi lacquer are applied over a painted motif - it is similar to Tame-Nuri technique, in which lacquer is applied over a solid color. The underlying motif in Tame-Sukashi will become more promiment over time as the Urushi lacquer ages and becomes more transparent.
The Nakaya Portable Cigar Ascending Dragon in Heki-tamenuri is actually an intriguing multi-finish pen. While most of the motif is realized in the same dark red Aka-tamenuri finish familiar from the Long Cigar Ascending Dragon Aka-tamenuri, Heki-tamenuri finish applied near where the cap and barrel meet provides dark green highlights. The full-sized Portable model provides an excellent canvas for the elaborate dragon design yet is more comfortable in the hand for many users.
The underlying layers of Aka-tamenuri and Heki-tamenuri will grow brighter as the topmost layers of clear Urushi lacquer mature. Recently finished pens often have an almost opaque appearance, but with the Tame-sukashi technique the underlying dragon motif will grow more and more prominent as time progresses.
