The heavy decorative rice paper, simple solid softwood shipping box and fabric pouch make a lovely presentation for Nakaya Urushi pens.

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar Shu fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.


With its deep, rich red color and compact shape, the Nakaya Piccolo Cigar Shu fountain pen is an understated yet elegant writing instrument. Shu translates to "red" in Japanese, and this writing instrument is made from multiple layers of hand-painted red Urushi lacquer.

The Urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pens its deep lustrous sheen and powerful color. As with all hand-made pens, colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly alike. 

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.


This is a more compact fountain pen than the Naka-ai or Neo Standard, yet will fit comfortably in most hands.

14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex - see our nib customizations page for more information.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.


Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer. 

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
