Nakaya Piccolo Cigar Metal Thread Kuro-tamenuri
If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, the Nakaya Piccolo Cigar Metal Thread Kuro-tamenuri fountain pen is it. This writing instrument achieves greatness by virtue of its streamlined design, excellent materials, flawless surface and saturated colors. Sleek, stealthy red-black Kuro-tamenuri on the finish provides an air of mystery and sophistication, while metal threads provide a greater heft than the traditional model.
The Urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift. Though it may appear black at first glance, with time the Kuro-tamenuri color will change to reveal more of the red underlayers. You can start to see where the red breaks free from beneath the black Urushi on the gripping section as well as on the "seams" where the cap and barrel meet.
If you have always enjoyed Nakaya's ebonite and urushi fountain pens, but would prefer a writing instrument with a bit more heft than these provide, the new Metal Thread in Kuro-tamenuri may be the pen for you. Note the metal threading at the front of the barrel - this, and the $100 reduction in the price, is the only difference between these Metal Thread pens and the traditional all-ebonite versions of these pens.
The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
