The subtle shape of this Nakaya Neo Standard fountain pen is revealed at the junction where the cap and the barrel meet.

The fascinating feature of this pen is that the image literally "ascends" with use as the image of the dragon comes up as the pen is handled. In this slow process the owner's hand and everyday wear will give this pen the beauty of age. The dragon also appears to ascend along the length of the writing instrument.

Previous versions of the "Ascending Dragon" series have modeled the dragon in the likeness of ancient Chinese painting. This version, however, unveils a dragon more in line with Japanese culture and taste. The artist has painted a Magamata, or comma-shaped bead, on the dragon ball located on the pen's cap. On the gripping section the artist depicts the dragon's nail using Tomoe, or three comma-shaped figures in a circle. The design is harmonious, bringing multiple components together with similar elements.

The Neo Standard only comes in the Writer model with a clip, which allows the pen to be easily affixed to a shirt pocket. Here rhodium plating on the clip creates an interesting contrasts with the Aka-tamenuri finish. You can see the lighter underlayers of red already beginning to peek through on the end cap, and they will become much more prominent over time.
