As with all Nakaya ebonite urushi pens, the Long Writer in Shu Polished is the product of a multi-part artisanal production process requiring the skills of numerous artisans and skilled technicians. The cap and barrel are hand-turned in a Tokyo workshop from ebonite hard rubber sustainably harvested from the rubber gum tree, while the urushi lacquer itself is also a natural substance, derived from the sap of a tree native to Japan, China, and other parts of Asia.
Lacquering of the pen takes place in artisanal workshops in the town of Wajima on the west coast of Japan, which has a centuries-old tradition of creating unique lacquer ware. Multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied, allowed to dry, and then polished in a process requiring many months.
As with all Nakaya pens, the Long Writer in Shu Polished ships in an attractive softwood presentation box decorated with kanji-style script. A fabric kimono pen pouch, starter pack of Platinum ink cartridges, and complimentary converter for the use of any bottled fountain pen ink are also included.
