The Nakaya Long Writer Araishu fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer.

The Nakaya Long Writer Araishu fountain pen combines a streamlined shape with a vivid orange finish for a bright take on a classic. First seen on Waterman's hard rubber pens around 1910, orange became a famous color with the Parker Big Red, a ground breaking pen of the 1920's, and continues to be associated with fountain pens worldwide. A gold clip adds a practical element to this long writer and breaks up the visual appearance of the solid finish.

At a closed length of 6.66", this is not a pen you would store in a shirt pocket. Even with its long size, this writing instrument is extremely well-balanced in the hand. The softly rounded shape adds to its style and practicality, while the extra long gripping section on the Long model is very comfortable between the fingers.

Araishu in Japanese translates from "shu" for red and "arai" for laundry. The meaning of the combined word suggests a red that has been washed to the extent that it is no longer red, but rather a paler red-orange. The acceptance of change over time as in the case of something repeatedly laundered is a hallmark of Japanese language. In this case when we embrace the passage of time we embrace the Araishu finish. As with all handmade pens, no two will be exactly alike, and the color may vary slightly from pen to pen.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The clip functions as a built in roll-stopper, preventing the pen from rolling off of a table or other flat surface.

Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
