The Nakaya Long Writer Aka-tamenuri is hand-crafted from ebonite hard rubber and natural urushi lacquer in Tokyo and Wajima. Each pen is provided with your choice of 14k solid gold nib.

Our complimentary nib tuning adjusts optimum pressure and ink flow to your personal preferences, and our optional nib customizations can made this pen a valuable tool for the professional or amateur calligrapher. We are the sole authorized Nakaya dealer in the English speaking world.

With its simple yet elegant shape and classic finish, the Nakaya Long Writer Aka-tamenuri fountain pen is a study in the powerful beauty of subtlety. The Urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pens its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift.

This is not a pen you would store in a shirt pocket. Even with its long size, this writing instrument is extremely well-balanced in the hand.

These close-ups give a sense of the subtle color shift that occurs on a new pen. As the pen ages with careful handling, more of the bright red undercolor emerges.

 


Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

 

Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

 


Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer. 

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
