The Nakaya Long Cigar Nuno Kise fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite, Urushi lacquer, silver tin, and fabric. It comes with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.
The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

Many of Nakaya's special edition pens use unique combinations of technique which defy easy categorization by the traditional standards of Maki-e art. As always, Nakaya seeks to stretch the boundaries of what can be achieved both on and with a fountain pen.

The pen body is hand-turned from ebonite hard rubber which has been sustainably harvested from the rubber gum tree. Ebonite is the classic material for quality fountain pens - writing instruments created using this material have been in everyday usage for a hundred years or more. This is not a pen you would keep in a shirt pocket, yet it maintains excellent balance in the hand.

Applications of fabric, silver tin, and lacquer create a unique textural finish. The semi-gloss surface reflects the handmade process with its subtle ridges interspersed with smoother sections. This is truly a writing instrument you need to feel in the hands in order to appreciate the magnitude of its beauty.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available. The rounded end cap is not completely smooth and uniform but rather maintains the natural look of the Nuno Kise process.

Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
Though the entire range of Nakaya nibs is made available, the ruthenium-plated nib complements the deep silver of the Nuno Kise.

Note that the gripping section is finished in the same silver tin and lacquer mix in the stone textured Ishime kanshitsu surface, which feels wonderful between the fingers.

Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen "kimono" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships. See our nib set-up and optimization page for more details.
