Nakaya Long Cigar Ashi
The wind blowing through a bamboo grove inspires the motif on this beautiful pen. The Nakaya Long Cigar Ashi fountain pen utilizes the the time-intensive and elaborate Kaki-Wari Maki-e technique to achieve its subtle and engaging effects. Gold urushi powder is used in the reed design, which defines details down to the level of individual fronds and leaflets.
Maki-e, literally "sprinkled powder," is a general term for the process by which figurative or abstract designs are created by sprinkling pigment or metallic powder onto the surface of Urushi lacquer while it is still wet. There are many varieties of Maki-e - see our Special Editions page for particular variations such as Tame-sukashi, Raden, and Chinkin.
We are particularly attracted to the designs on this pen. It winds around the barrel and cap in such a way that one wants to hold and turn it in your fingers. The reeds are made is razor crisp detail including the center shaft of each leaf.
The Nakaya nib is imprinted with Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer, and is made from solid 14k gold in your choice of tipping size.
