One of the most distinctive pen models created by Nakaya, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 is created by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer over a period of months to create the fin shape on the cap and barrel. The surface is then completed in either smooth urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish.

Combining an innovative shape with a unique mustard yellow finish, Nakaya introduces the Dorsal Fin Version 2 in smooth Nanohana-iro. The Dorsal Fin Version 2 has long been favored for its aesthetically pleasing cap and barrel fins, which also serve as built-in roll stoppers. Traditionally made available in Ishime-Kanshitsu stone finish, this model is now being produced in several smooth urushi colors, including this Nanohana-iro version.

As urushi is a natural substance, variations in hue are to be expected from batch to batch - no two pens will ever be exactly alike. Nanohana-iro seems a particularly variable color, ranging in tone from the yellow-green seen here to a drier desert yellow at other times. The peaks and fins on the Dorsal Version 2 serve as an excellent showcase for this nuanced color, juxtaposing a modern shape with a vintage shade.

To create the two fins on this version, multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied to the height of the fin. Though it can be made available with any of Nakaya's nibs, the ruthenium version pictured here brings an added element of interest with its cool, smoky sheen.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in smooth Nanohana-iro finish is provided with  solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.


The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Please note that Nakaya has changed the hue of this finish - the new version can be seen in the base color of the Portable Cigar Zaryu 2 pen. As with all Nakaya colors, the exact hue of each hand-finished pen may vary slightly - no two will ever be exactly the same.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
