Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 Aka-tamenuri

One of the most distinctive pen models created by Nakaya, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 is created by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer over a period of months to create the fin shape on the cap and barrel. The surface is then completed in smooth urushi finish.

My order arrived today and I am thrilled to death by it. The depth of the finish is absolutely mesmerizing. I ordered a broad nib assuming it would be closer to a medium and I'm not disappointed by that estimate. Also, I asked for a medium-to-wet flow on the tuning and the result exceeds my expectation. Wow.

Nakaya's Dorsal Fin pens in Ishime-Kanshitsu stone finish have proven to be extremely popular with pen lovers - the fin shape on the cap is both aesthetically striking and also serves as a built-in roll-stopper. Now Nakaya has introduced a new version of this style in smooth urushi Aka-tamenuri finish.

The smooth tamenuri finish highlights the sleek minimalism of this pen - form and function are united in an exemplary manner.

This pen is made by applying multiple layers of Urushi lacquer to the height of the fin. Mark Twain, referring to a similar feature on the 1920's Conklin pen, called it a "profanity-saver: It cannot roll off the desk."

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in smooth Aka-tamenuri finish is provided with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
