Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 Ishime-Kanshitsu Aka-tamenuri
The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 is one of the most innovative and distinctive designs created by Nakaya. Layers of Urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the fin on the cap, and the surface is then completed with either smooth Urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish. With either finish, this is one of the most memorable writing instruments Nakaya has produced.
Nakaya has created something unique with its Dorsal Fin series of fountain pens, and the version in Aka-tamenuri Ishime-Kanshitsu finish is one of the most distinctive and visually arresting.
This is one of the most time-intensive pens created by Nakaya. The cap and barrel are hand-turned from natural ebonite harvested from the rubber gum tree. Layer after layer of urushi lacquer is then applied to create the distinctive fin on the cap, while powdered urushi lacquer is also used to create the stone-finish texture.
The Nakaya Dorsal Fin can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
