Based on a well-known work by the innovative mid-Edo period artist Jakuchu Ito, the motif of the Nakaya Bangasa Gungyo-ku stretches the boundaries of what is usually considered possible in hand-carved Chinkin technique. Up to a year is required for a skilled Maki-e artist in the traditional craft center of Wajima on the west coast of Japan to complete each pen.
The Bangasa is Nakaya's flat-topped 17mm diameter model, used only for special works of extremely advanced Maki-e art such as this - please note that it is not made available for standard solid color or Tame-nuri finishes, or even for most Maki-e motifs. Not just a beautiful work of art in its own right, this is also a highly practical every day writing instrument - the pen can fill using any bottled fountain pen ink when fitted with the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges.
This Nakaya pen ships in a special softwood presentation box with kanji-style script. A fabric pen kimono and starter pack of ink cartridges is included along with the converter. Collectors wishing to have the pen unmodified may request this in their notes during check-out.
