Nakaya Nanten Karakusa Long Cigar Near-Mint
Nanten (Sacred bamboo, Nandina) seed has a purifying effect and is said to be good for back pain. In keeping with the Japanese tradition of appreciating nature, this hand painted pen embodies that approach. The sound "Nanten" can be written in other Chinese characters which then means "reverse bad luck," and therefore it is popular to be used for good luck. This pen comes with a customized Medium crisp cursive italic nib created here at Nibs.com. Other choices are available on request.

Here on the Nakaya Long Cigar, Nanten is painted in the Karakusa design with platinum powder and colored urushi lacquer. The platinum dust is sprinkled into the layers of wet urushi lacquer before it is set. Then it is polished prior to the hand painting of the sacred bamboo. Notice that the pen not only has custom kanji on the barrel, but that the Maki-e artist also left secret flowers on the inside of the cap lip.
The heavy decorative rice paper outer box, simple solid softwood shipping inner box, and fabric pouch make a lovely presentation for this Nakaya Urushi pen. Sensible and elegant packaging are a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
