The use of cherry blossoms, sakura, as a motif in Japanese art brings with it multi-layered significance. On the one hand, cherry blossoms call to mind the spring season and the tradition of hanami, flower viewing. But the quick blooming and transient beauty of cherry blossoms also marks the sakura as a symbol of impermanence and mortality.
The sakura motif seen here has been realized in exquisitely detailed chinkin technique by members of the Kokkokai artists collective, an association of traditional Maki-e artisans with a history stretching back over eight decades. Years of training are required to learn painstaking chinkin technique, and one small error can erase days of effort, requiring the entire finishing process to be started over again.
The Chinkin Cherry Blossoms utilizes Namiki's convenient cartridge-converter filling system - the pen can fill using any bottled fountain pen ink when fitted with the provided reusable converter. Alternatively, the pen can also use Pilot brand disposable ink cartridges. With either filling system, this is a pen that can offer writing qualities on the page equal to the beauty of its appearance.
