The Namiki Chinkin Silver Grass is a superb example of this exacting and time-intensive Maki-e technique. Each pen is hand-finished by a skilled Maki-e artist in the Kokkokai artisan group at the Namiki workshop in Kanagawa.

In Chinkin Maki-e techinque, a special carving tool is used to engrave an intricate pattern in recently dried urushi lacquer. Gold powder and gold dust are then added into the grooves and lines that have been created. Accuracy is vital - one small mistake can result in the entire pen needing to be re-lacquered and the process started over again. Chinkin artists often challenge themselves with intricate motifs drawn from the natural world, as with the silver grass seen on this pen.
