The Dragonfly is sometimes known as “Kachimushi” (literally “Victory Bugs”), and is believed to be a symbol of courage.

This comes from the story of when the ancient emperor Yuryaku was leading his men into battle and a horsefly that was about to bite his arm was caught up and carried away by a passing dragonfly. Dragonflies do not retreat, but fly straight and steadfastly to catch their prey. For this reason, from early days, the “Kachimushi” dragonfly was popular in Japan as a symbol of victory, and was used as a design motif on the helmets, swords and armor of Samurai warriors.

Depicted with the “Kachimushi” dragonfly on this limited edition fountain pen is a lotus plant. The lotus is said to have grown and blossomed from a single root that lay buried for two thousand years. When cut in slices, the stalk of the ancient plant is filled with holes which are said to symbolize an open pathway to the future, and so, like the dragonfly, it too is a motif that is thought to bring good fortune.

Brought together, the transient yet powerful life-force of the lotus, and the victorious “Kachimushi” dragonfly, symbolize courage, hope and renewal.

Only 150 Kachimushi pens have been made available worldwide. The base is the Yukari Royale, decorated with both Taka (Raised) Maki-e and Togidashi (Burnished) Maki-e techniques by master craftsman Masahiro.

Taka Maki-e dragonfly hovers above the lotus on Raden (mother-of-pearl wings), delicate and lifelike, and the elegant flower itself is depicted in vivid colour. The scene is set with leaves and water expressed in Togidashi Maki-e, giving the whole a rich, evocative depth. In addition, the Taka Maki-e dragonfly motif on the neck adds a further special touch to this one of a kind fountain pen.

This pen comes with a two-tone rhodium accented 18k gold nib. It is presented in a luxurious lacquer gift box, with a traditional Kisotsuishu lacquer ware lid. This lid is decorated with the same dragonfly and lotus motifs floating on numerous colored layers of lacquer, which have been polished to reveal a pattern that implies the sparkling surface of water. What’s more, the pen comes with an original ink bottle, to complete this exquisite set. The ink bottle has dragonflies on the cap and the lacquer box also has dragonflies on a corner in lacquer work.

We are sure the 2013 Namiki limited edition “Kachimushi” will be loved by collectors around the world for years to come.
