The Dragon is one of the most ubiquitous and iconic images in Japanese art, and the motif realized here emphasizes the fierce and powerful nature of this noble and protective creature. Multiple chinkin layers and a liberal use of gold powder bring this remarkable portrait to life. Note the range of marks, including dots, lines and sweeps, each one hand inscribed into the barrel and cap. Such careful hand work is exceptional in this digital world.
