Many layers of bright red color are applied over the ebonite barrel and cap followed by more layers of urushi lacquer which partly obscures the red. The effect is a warm glow coming from within.

The Nakaya Piccolo Writer Aka-tamenuri fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and multiple layers of urushi lacquer.

The urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has protected utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift. Over time with use, the brighter red under-layer will become even more prominent. You can see the red beginning to break through where the cap meets the barrel and at the domed end cap.
This is a more compact fountain pen than the other Nakaya models, yet will fit comfortably in most hands.
