Nakaya Piccolo Writer Aka-tamenuri

The Nakaya Piccolo Writer Aka-tamenuri is a study in layered colors, profoundly simple design in a compact model. Many layers of bright red color are applied over the ebonite barrel and cap followed by more layers of urushi lacquer which partly obscures the red. The effect is a warm glow coming from within.

The Nakaya Piccolo Writer Aka-tamenuri fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and multiple layers of urushi lacquer.

If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, this is it. Nakaya pens achieve greatness by virtue of their streamlined design, excellent materials, and flawless surfaces.

The urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has protected utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift. Over time with use, the brighter red under-layer will become even more prominent. You can see the red beginning to break through where the cap meets the barrel and at the domed end cap.

This is a more compact fountain pen than the other Nakaya models, yet will fit comfortably in most hands.
This simple elegant shape, with its turned tapered pyramid ends and smooth transition between the cap and barrel, is a fine example of spare design.

The Nakaya Piccolo Writer can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand high quality ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Architect's point, Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flexibility.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics.
