Each Nakaya pen is hand-crafted in a process that can take six months to a year or more. The pen body is hand-turned from natural ebonite hard rubber in the Nakaya workshop in Tokyo, and natural urushi lacquer is then applied to the pen in the traditional craft center of Wajima on the west coast of Japan.

Each Nakaya nib is also the result of an intensely artisinal process - over twenty steps, each overseen by a skilled specialist in nib manufacture, are required to transform unformed 14k gold into a finely crafted writing tip.

Each Nakaya pen ships in a special softwood presentation box decorated with kanji-style script. A fabric pen kimono and starter pack of ink cartridges are included.
