This stock Pelikan O3B (oblique triple broad) nib does not
show much line variation. They are frequently poorly aligned when they come from
the factory. Our custom cut remedies both those shortcomings, creating a smooth,
well-balanced writing tip. (The sample below is written with Sailor's
"Gentle" brown ink.) | |

Writing Samples with Various Tips from the
Nib Works |
The following sequence
of writing samples are thanks to Pat Ackor, a left-handed under-writer. They are
not to actual size, as each screen presents them differently.
|
| Note the very narrow horizontal
strokes. A smoother tip to write with. Smoother
yet but with less definition. Cut so that the fine
stroke is on the diagonal. |

We
created four different points on four different Namiki
Vanishing Point nib units: a Broad formal italic (sharp-edged and difficult
to write with), a Medium cursive italic, a Medium Stub and a Medium Left Oblique. |
| This fine cursive italic point
is well suited to everyday writing. (The formal italic is not.) |
"Pat
and John - I wanted to drop you a line to let you know how pleased I am
with the fine cursive italic nib you crafted for my Pelikan M800. I'm a
left handed underwriter, and it writes like a dream-smooth and wet with interesting
subtle line variation...it has quickly become my pen of choice for daily writing...Sincerely,
Richard Neuhaus" (09/24/01) |

The medium stub tip shows less line width variation than the italic. It
is, however, smoother. (See the Pilot page.) |

"Wow!
I've never tried a stub nib before and does it add character to my writing. You
may have gotten me hooked on stubs..... Thank you, Vic" (Leung)(9/28/01)
|
| This is an unusual tip. We make it using
iridium platinum wire. This gives almost an unlimited width. See this nib. | |
| We make extra flexible nibs in all widths
and most styles. 14k works best for these. |
|
| This 14k Pelikan nib is now
flexible at the same time that the tip is extra-fine. See this nib. |

|
| Notice how, using
greater pressure, the line width changes on the downstroke. These tips are
challenging to use. |
|
| David L. penned this with
one of our Namiki Falcons modified with an extra fine extra flexible nib. |

Here is a sample of writing by one of our customers, Edward Weyman, who is using
a dip pen which we re-tipped. |

This ad shows the ca. 1925 Parker Duofold selection
of tip styles. Notice how the Stub tip is cut straight across and the Oblique
is cut at an angle, down on the left. (We call this a left oblique.) |
|
|
| Of course, these are
not our tips. These tipping styles have been around a long time. (Note,
the absence of the italic tips. They did not show up in any quantity until
the 1970's.)
