Nakaya Portable Writer
Many Treasures Fountain Pen
The Portable model is smooth and slender, providing the perfect backdrop to showcase the convergence of Eastern and Western art depicted on Nakaya's Portable Writer Many Treasures fountain pen. The name of the pen relates to the Japanese tradition of finding many treasures in the world of things, and with this singular writing instrument alludes to the concept of the many in the one. Yet this idea is carried off in an abstract way that invokes the constructivist period of art in the early twentieth century, which laid the foundation for so much modern art in the Western world.
Constructivism was an artistic and architectural
movement in Russia from 1919 onward which rejected the idea of
"art for art's sake" in favor of art as a practice directed
towards social purposes. This populist movement spread west and
many artists, including Picasso, were heavily influenced by the
Russian constructivists. You can see the influence in the abstract art here, which not only serves as art but also as a reminder of the Eastern "many treasures" philosophy.
The Portable Writer Many Treasures fountain pen is made of hand-turned ebonite hard rubber in Nakaya's Tokyo workshop, and then sent to the Wajima region in western Japan for Maki-e work and finishing with Urushi lacquer. Take a closer look at the way the brightly colored pieces seem to dance against the black background with its "Roiro" finish,
a special polishing method to create a mirror-like surface. Gold shapes come to a forefront here, while green, blue, grey, silver, and red round out the color palette. The matching gold clip allows the pen to easily be affixed to a shirt pocket.
