Nakaya Portable Cigar
Karasu Kite and Crow
With its snow-covered branches and striking black crows, the Nakaya Portable Cigar Karasu Kite and Crow fountain pen pays homage to Yosa Buson's masterpiece "Kite and Crow" from the Edo period in Japan. Nakaya utilizes Yakou Maki-e technique in order to create a visual and textural masterpiece. The smooth and slender Portable model serves as a canvas for the detailed artwork and is perfect for those who want the design of the Long Cigar Kite and Crow in a slightly smaller model.
Like all Nakaya Urushi pens, the Karasu Kite and Crow is made of hand-turned ebonite hard rubber in Nakaya's Tokyo workshop, then sent to the Wajima region in western Japan for Maki-e work and finishing with Urushi lacquer. Using Yakou Maki-e technique, black lacquer is painted over the Aka-tamenuri base to create the crows, while silver powder is layered to emulate snow-covered branches.
Take a closer look at the detailed artwork on the Portable Cigar Karasu Kite and Crow fountain pen. When you hold the writing instrument you can feel the raised texture of the black lacquer and silver powder, as if nature is truly coming to life. Notice how closely the design emulates the winter scene of Yosa Buson's painting, below right.
