Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 Toki-iro

Nakaya has discontinued Toki-iro finish, and we have just one Dorsal Fin Version 1 pen in this color still remaining - once it is gone, no more will be available.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 is one of the most innovative and distinctive designs created by Nakaya. Layers of urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the fin on the cap, and the surface is then completed with either smooth urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish. With either finish, this is one of the most memorable writing instruments Nakaya has produced.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 Toki-iro fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and urushi lacquer. It comes with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

The Dorsal Fin Version 1 Toki-iro fountain pen makes a bold statement by combining a playful finish with a unique, sculptural form. Previously available only as an introductory limited edition which has sold out, we are now offering Toki-iro as one of the Nakaya premium colors we offer. The Dorsal Fin Version 1 exemplifies the sleek minimalism of Nakaya style - form and function are harmoniously united, with the raised fin on the cap providing a distinctive aesthetic feature as well as serving as a built-in roll-stopper.

Multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the raised fin - this is one of the most time-intensive procedures utilized by Nakaya. Even the ebonite hard rubber used for the pen body is a natural product, sustainably harvested from the rubber gum tree.
Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Dorsal Fin is also a terrific everyday writer. As with all Nakaya pens, the balance is superb.

The Dorsal Fin Version 1 in Toki-iro is a unique rose-pink color that differs from Nakaya's well-known repertoire of darker hues. As with all hand-made pens, colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly alike.

"Toki" refers to the Japanese Crested Ibis, a bird once abundant in Japan but now on the verge of extinction. Covered with a veil of pinkish-white feathers, this bird is a Japanese treasure. The muted pink resembles some of the Toki's coloring.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

These smooth-writing nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
