Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 Awai-murasaki

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 is one of the most innovative and distinctive designs created by Nakaya. Layers of Urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the fin on the cap, and the surface is then completed with either smooth Urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish. With either finish, this is one of the most memorable writing instruments Nakaya has produced.

Nakaya's Dorsal Fin Version 1 in Awai-Murasaki brings a lighter, pastel finish to the traditional repertoire of hues for which Nakaya is known, and makes a bold statement with its unique shape and raised cap fin. Muted, dusty purple drenches the entire surface of this structurally sleek fountain pen, creating an interesting juxtaposition of architectural lines and playful coloring.

The single cap fin takes on the appearance of a billowed sail when the Dorsal Fin Version 1 Awai-Murasaki fountain pen is viewed from its side. Multiple layers of Urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the raised fin - this is one of the most time-intensive procedures utilized by Nakaya.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Dorsal Fin is also a terrific everyday writer; the balance is superb. Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

Smooth purple urushi lacquer coats the cap and body of the pen, adding a distinctive muted shine.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 in smooth Awai-Murasaki finish can be provided with any of Nakaya's solid gold 14k nibs in your choice of tipping size.

The Nakaya double-slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs.
These smooth-writing nibs are well-suited to customizations for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
