With its ten facets and smooth reddish red urushi finish, the Nakaya Decapod Writer Aka-tamenuri fountain pen is a unique stunner. The Writer model has a clip, and shows off the streamlined shape of the Decapod with its crisp, sleek facets, which follow from end to end in a long smooth curve. It is a shape that can be described by pure geometry except that it is subtly more complex. In the end it is the eye and the hand that this shape most satisfies.

The ten sided shape has another function. Because it is not round in cross section the barrel is not likely to roll off a desk. The gold clip also serves as an extra roll stopper. The Decapod gives facets an entire new meaning.

This urushi application appears to glow from within. The darker outer color "pulls back" from edges leaving an impression of inner light. Because this occurs on every edge of this pen, this faceted models exhibit many opportunities for this effect. Over time the underlying red color will become even more vibrant. The urushi lacquer acts something like a ceramic glaze, emphasizing the form.

Notice how the ends of this pen are beveled to finish the facets. Not only does this trim the cap and barrel end, it also provides a rounder edge, rendering it more likely to wear evenly. Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. They can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available, as are a wide range of other options and accessories.

These 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensibly elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
