Sailor Wood Maki-e Plum

This Sailor Wood Maki-e illustrates a traditional Plum /Ume motif.
Each pen in the series measures 6 1/2" in length, the barrel diameter is 1/2" and the cap diameter is 9/16". At 31 grams with the empty converter installed, it feels just the right weight in my hand.
The use of Lacquer on wood dates back hundreds of years in Japan.
Used in table wear, on the scabbards of samurai swords and on early armor, this material has proved to be very stable.
Notice the variety of applications of the gold in urushi, including smooth surfaces, raised portions, coarse gold and red lacquer. Notice how the

tree root turns into the textured gold "earth" below.
The branches of the plum wind around the barrel of this pen and meet on the other side, creating an engaging composition no matter from what angle it is viewed.

Notice, to the left, the exuberance of this artist's signature.

The entire composition is executed in just two colors against the warm tone of the aged wood. (The wood is cured for up a decade before it is employed for pen bodies.)

The 18K Sailor nib is smooth and of the highest quality. It is available from us in fine, medium and broad.
This is a higher level of maki-e than that seen on the resin 1911 pen.
This pen comes in a softwood presentation box lined with midnight blue velvet. The standard high quality Sailor converter and two cartridges are included. We have the complete line of Sailor cartridge ink for those on the go.
