| The Sailor Mandarin Duck is a more colorful and intensely figurative theme than either the Grape or the Plum. The male and female duck are clearly depicted on the wooden body of this pen. | ||||

| The water scene is completed with reeds and stylized ripples on the cap and more ripples on the barrel. | ||||

A detail of the two Mandarin ducks is seen to the left. Note the inlaid (raden) piece of abalone for the male's eye. The ducks and the area surrounding them illustrate a variety of texture, as seen below. Smooth gold surfaces, raised surfaces and bits of gold are inlaid into the lacquer resin (urushi). |
