Tanabata - The Meeting of the Stars 33 pc. Limited
Edition |
Here is a pen with a story. Sailor has produced a red Urushi lacquer King of
Pen to commemorate the Japanese star festival, Tanabata. This festival celebrates
the meeting of Altair and Vega, two star crossed lovers, who according to legend,
were separated by the Milky Way and fated to meet only once a year. In Japan on
the seventh day of the seventh lunar month every year, large colorful streamers
decorate city streets. Wishes are written on small pieces of paper and hung from
bamboo to commemorate the stars meeting. At midnight, the bamboo and decorations
are set afloat on a river or burned. (According to the Gregorian calendar 2007's
celebration will take place on August 18th). |
|
| Many poems have been written about this
special night. Haiku poet Kobayashi Issa wrote, naku na mushi wakaruru
koi wa hoshi ni sae, which translates: don't cry, crickets --
lovers part even among the stars |
|
The Urushi maki-e artist for this
project, Mai Sato, has used fragments of abalone to represent the Milky Way and
an inlaid mother-of-pearl dot on both sides of the barrel representing Altair
and Vega. There are two streaks of blue abalone shimmering against the red Urushi.
The artists signature in gold can be seen at the base of the barrel. |

| With only 33 pieces
of this Limited Edition series being produced worldwide, we will be the
exclusive dealer of this fountain pen in the United States. We
expect to receive our very small shipment by mid-to-late July, 2007. If numbers
are as they have been in other limited edition issues, we will see fewer than
can be counted on one hand. This
fountain pen comes with a 21k gold nib. The Nagahara Cross nib will also
be available for an additional charge. Each pen comes in its own presentation
box accompanied with a certificate bearing the signature of the artist and its
limited edition number.
In our view, this pen represents
an apex of shape, simplicity, and a wonderful decorative application. |
The Tanabata with Cross nib can be seen to the right.
