Sapporo Series |
| Sapporo, Japan's fifth largest city
is the name chosen by Sailor for this expanding series of fountain
pens*. |
The picture below shows the size relationship between the full size Professional Gear and the Sapporo fountain pens. |
 |
| As of early 2007 Sailor has
redesigned their line of pens. Sporting the Sailor anchor logo
in metal on the top of the cap and showing bands around the
end of the barrel as well as both ends of the cap, we believe
this pen is a classic. The simple sophistication
of the clip and the well proportioned shape of the overall pen
suggest that the model will be around for a while. |

The Sapporo is a scaled down version of the
Professional Gear and is available with rhodium or gold trim.
The Sapporo Mini is even smaller. It reminds us of the "Tuck-away"
pens of the 1940's. We noticed that the cap, nib section and
feed are interchangeable between the Sapporo and the Sapporo
Mini. |
| The first of this design to
arrive under a different name was the Professional Gear pen.
This has been followed by the Sapporo and Sapporo Mini. Now it is available in a variety of colors and with the same great nibs. |
| *Prior to its establishment,
the area occupied by Sapporo (known as the Ishikari Plain) was
home to a number of indigenous Ainu settlements. In 1866 at
the end of the Edo Period construction began on a canal through
the area, encouraging a number of early settlers to establish
Sapporo village. The settlement's name was taken from the Ainu
language, and can be translated as "large river running
through a plain". Sapporo is the youngest large city in
Japan. |
