New King of Pen
|
| In the Fall of 2005 Sailor
has released the new version of the "King of Pen".
This is Sailor's simplest design in an oversized pen. Unlike
the earlier version, this pen has no cap and barrel bands. |
| |
| No trim whatever shows on
this pen when in the capped position. |
| |
| This pen lays the groundwork
for a series of hand painted fountain pens. The uninterrupted
surface is a natural blank page for the work of the Maki-e artist.
However, this pen in its simple minimalist tapered shape appeals
to those who appreciate industrial design at its fundamental
level. At 6 1/16" long, with cap on, and 35 grams, this
is a moderate weight pen for its size. The balance is excellent. |
| |
Like the fountain pens made at the end of the 19th century,
this pen is made from black hard rubber, not resin or plastic.
(Collectors user the initials BHR to denote pens made from this
material.) The highly polished surface looks like plastic but,
if rubbed briskly with a knuckle, it gives off a faint smell
of rubber.
We can only conjecture why Sailor chose to
call this the King of Pen instead of the King of Pens, however
one thing does not get lost in translation, this pen's minimalist
simplicity.
The Sailor nib, arguably the best produced in the world, makes
this pen a joy to write with. The pen is available in Medium,
Broad and a range of custom nibs. For more information on these
Sailor nibs, click here.

| The King of Pen comes in a
simple dark wood presentation box with a bottle of Sailor black
Gentle ink. The pen accepts either a standard Sailor converter
or Sailor's cartridges |
As of May of 2007 there are fewer than 25 of the
King Eagle nib in this country. This pen and these nibs
are only produced in limited numbers. Mr. Nagahara is the
only person making them and he has other projects as well.

"John:
I received The Pen on Friday, and what a king it is! At first
I thought a queen would be a better fit for me, but I quickly
adapted to the robust size since I always remove the cap when
I write with any pen. I found the simplicity of the design
to be elegant and timeless. The nib is smooth, but I will
have to write with it for quite a while before I decide whether
to ask you to grind the point slightly thiner. (The ink spread
is so dependent on the type of paper used that making a choice
to a permanent adjustment is a tough call.) When I first held
the pen I thought I saw a slight dark brown cast to the color
of the barrel and cap so I held it up to the light. Then I
read the Sailor information notes that accompanied the pen,
and it explained that indeed there was a color shift toward
brown with the use of the instrument. That made me like my
Pen even more.
With thanks,
Elizabeth" (7/8/06)
"Dear Pat and John,
I have been exceedingly remiss in not writing relative to
my wonderfully modified Sailor King of Pen. The nib is quite
fantastic (Ed: a re-tip/re-shape to BB stub/music) and I praise
your craftsmanship every time it is uncapped to write in my
journal. It has become my pen of choice, its simplicity is
its beauty. Despite its size it is well-balanced and easy
to grasp (particularly for a writer with diminishing physical
strength). Thanks so very much, and again, I apologize for
failing to write sooner, Harris Saltzburg" (4/24/06)
