The Sailor Maki-e Mimisuku Owl combines three figurative elements, the owl, moon and a tree. This night scene uses the black base color of the pen to advantage.

The branches of the tree twist and fork in on both the cap and barrel. The cap branches as much smaller, suggesting a considerable distance above the barrel scene.

Tiny pieces of gold flake are embedded in urushi resin. The size of the pieces create a variety of textures on the owl, branches, and the moon. Abalone flakes are set into the eyes to reflect light. Note the artists signature to the left, also in gold.

The pen is the same size and has the same converter/cartridge filling mechanism as the 1911. It comes in a small softwood box with two extra cartridges and all the papers.
