Sailor Maki-e Koi Supreme
Fountain Pen
|
|
|
|
The new Koi has more elaborate and detailed
imagery than the earlier version.
|
|
|
Not only is the Koi more defined, it is swimming
in a waterfall that begins at the cap and descends diagonally
to the end of the barrel.
Although it is hard to see in this photo, the eye of the carp
is Raden, reflective abalone shell, with a center black dot
painted in. Because the eye is not too large, an element of
realism is maintained. This is further enhanced by the delicate
scales on the back of the fish.
|
|
On the back of the cap a pine branch holds tow pine
cones over the crest of the waterfall. Notice the two
Maki-e gold and bronze applications.

Please see our Namiki
Emperor, Carp on Waterfall on this web site for
another version of this motif.
|
|
Reflective bubbles of Raden,
gold and silver add space and froth to the motif. |

The design of Carp with Waterfalls is famous in Japanese
art extending back to the Edo period.
Each Maki-e pen is signed by the artist, Kousen Oshita.
Although simple in execution compared with other
much more elaborate designs, this Carp has a simple
elegance that, we feel is superior to the earlier
version. Notice the clarity and boldness of this signature.
