Sailor King of Pen Red Urushi Fountain Pen
This Red Urushi is the first lacquered King of Pen. It breaks ground for Sailor into the traditional Maki-e territory.
No trim shows on this pen when the cap is closed. Notice the straightforward and well proportioned gold clip.
At 6 1/16" long capped, and 35 grams, this is a moderate weight for a fountain pen of this size. The balance is excellent. The shape is simple.
The Urushi exterior is recognized in Japan as a surface that improves with age. It develops a patina which, over a great deal of time, exposes the black ebonite underneath; this process is revered in Japan.

Though simple in appearance, the red Urushi surface requires great skill to execute. These pens are flawlessly made by artist Kato Seishou in the time honored tradition of Urushi resin application. The artist is well known in Japan as a master of Maki-e, having worked on the restoration of Takamijura, the emperor's throne and Michoudai, a curtained platform used by nobles in the Heian period.

The red color is both rich and deep, a prefect balance between brightness and gravitas.

The pen is available in Medium and Broad nibs. A range of custom nibs are also available. For more information on Sailor nibs, click here. For Sailor specialty nibs, click here.

The King of Pen comes in a simple dark wood presentation box with a bottle of Sailor black Gentle ink. The pen accepts either a standard Sailor converter or Sailor's cartridges
