Seeing whales rise from the depths, breaching into the air will cause a sense of wonder in all but the most hardened of humans. These are animals that live in both worlds, the submarine and the surface of oceans. This pen depicts three whales, a mother and her calf, under water on the barrel and another breaching at a distance on the cap. Red iron oxide pigment grades into gold dust to create a setting sun behind the whale in silhouette on the cap. More gold dust adds the effect of a glistening sun on ocean waves.

These pens illustrate the ability of the artist to exploit the shape of the pen in the design. The whale figures as well as the water forms wrap around the barrel and cap.
