Sailor
The King of Pen-Discontinued |

This is Sailor's largest offering, called
The King of Pen. Yes, this is a Sailor (you can be forgiven
if you thought of a different brand when you saw this image).
At 6 1/16" long, with cap on, it is the largest pen we
know of, this side of a Namiki Emperor. The size comparison
between this pen and Sailor's 1911 Series, can be seen below.
The King of Pen is a true handful.
|

The
filling system is a large-capacity twist converter and also takes Sailor ink cartridges. |
 |
The trim of this pen is a bright yellow gold, making the
engraving on the cap band striking, as the detail at left demonstrates. |
|
Like the fountain pens made at the end of the 19th century,
this pen is made from black hard rubber, not resin or plastic.
(The initials BHR in a description denote pens made from this
material.) The highly polished surface looks like plastic but,
if rubbed briskly with a knuckle, gives off the faint smell
of rubber.

The 21K nib has a white metal "mask"
on the engraved "frame" of the imprint. Because of
its large size, it is somewhat flexible. The
new simpler design of the King of Pen will be available
in the Fall of 2005. Being re-issued again in Ebonite, there
are no bands or rings around the barrel or cap; the clip serves
as the sole decoration. (We like to think that this unadorned
"canvas" will soon have maki-e designs applied.)
The retail price with
M or B nib is $945.00.
