| Dating from the fourth century BC, the Hanging Gardens were constructed by Nebuchadnezzar II as terraced roof gardens in Babylon. Contemporaries documented the history of this structure and gardens in cuneiform script, making it one of the oldest documents and offering us an understanding, not only of the building, but of the language as it was recorded.
