Pelikan Colossus
of Rhodes L.E .
The second in Pelikan's series, the
Seven Wonders of the World, this pen is a major production.
Surely one of the most impressive of the Seven Wonders
of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of Helois
that spanned the harbor entrance, stood for just 68
years before it was destroyed by an earthquake.
The bronze statue of the Greek God Helois,
the worshipped sun God and patron saint of the Aegean
island of Rhodes, was built with great architectonic
and artistic skill, as reported by the chroniclers of
the time. This Limited Edition pen is made of bronze,
one of the materials used in the Colossus. The edition
number is engraved on the filler knob. The number is
limited to 408, the date of the founding of the town
of Rhodes, 408 B. C.
The filler knob of this pen ends with
a bronze six sided medallion. This six sided theme is
carried out on the flat presentation box as well, the
nicest one so far.
Pelikan has
made great use of matte metal surfaces. This unusual
M1000 size nib is unique to the Colossus. Except for
the circular Pelikan Logo, the nib is sandblasted to
a deep matte finish, similar to the bronze cap. The
clip has the look of an archaic sand casting, with a
Greek key design imprinted on the face. This pen is
available with a fine,
medium or broad nib.
Although it has the appearance of something
very old, this pen is made with contemporary, high tech
methods, including laser cutting and engraving. The
surfaces are sumptuous and varied.
Note the interlocking pattern around the grip of the
pen.
As presented here, the colossus stands
astride the harbor entrance through which a ship passes
in full sail.
The clip terminates in a spade shape,
much like the Wahl clips of the 1920's.
We will not be getting very many
