Namiki Yukari Royale Night
Scene of Pavilion
In April 2008, this pen will be discontinued by Pilot-Namiki.

This hand made pen has become available at
the beginning of 2005. It is the second pavilion pen we have
seen in the past few years. (Emperor Pavilion pen is no longer
available.) This is a full sized (5 7/8" capped) pen, with
a superior cartridge - converter filling system.

|
The theme of this pen is much the same as the Emperor Pavilion:
contemplating landscape from a particular place, a pavilion.
The depiction on this pen is of a night time view. The waterfall,
the trees, the surrounding hillsides and the pavilion are
all illuminated by a full moon, lightly obscured by atmosphere.

The Night Scene Of Pavilion incorporates
two different Maki-e techniques, togidashi-maki-e (burnished
Maki-e) and taka-maki-e
|
|
(raised Maki-e). Togidashi-maki-e is a method
in which gilded patterns are dried, recoated with Urushi, and
finally burnished to a high sheen using charcoal. This style
of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The Taka-maki-e method is
a Maki-e applied on patterns in raised relief and dates to the
12th century. See how the light reflects off of the burnished
surfaces of the hills. Gold dust is carefully applied to the
surfaces, such as the spray from the top of the waterfall and
the area in front of the moon in order to create the proper
atmospheric perspective.
|

Notice the way that space is introduced by applying this atmosphere.
The hills recede, one behind the other in this image.
The wooden presentation box includes a bottle of Namiki ink,
the guarantee card, a certificate of authenticity and a card
with a signature and calligraphy showing the same characters
as we see here above. The artists name is Michifumi Kawaguchi.
