Yukari Morning Glory
The Morning Glory twines around this pen in a most delightful way.
Being a Yukari, this is not one of the largest of the Maki-e pens, but is still a standard size at 5 9/16" long, capped. It is however beautifully composed. Experiencing this pen requires holding it and revolving it, following the path of the vine.
The Morning Glory design incorporates two different Maki-e techniques, Togidashi-maki-e (burnished Maki-e) and Hira-maki-e (flat Maki-e). Togidashi-maki-e is a method in which gilded patterns are dried, recoated with urushi, and finally burnished to a high sheen using charcoal. This style of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The Hira-maki-e method uses colored urushi lacquers combined with raw lacquer which is then coated with a sprinkling of gold powder.
Requiring four months to finish, this pen was produced at the Hiratsuka Japan Maki-e workshop.
This pen is unique, as no two are exactly the same.

Notice the artists signature next to the bamboo trellis.
Gold and bronze flake create a sense of atmosphere and distance around the circumference of this pen.

The 18k nib is available in fine, medium and broad and is to our thinking of the highest quality made in the world.
Notice the use of empty space next to the painting of a morning glory bud above.
