Namiki Peacock Limited Edition
Namiki employs several Maki-e techniques in crafting their beautiful Peacock pen. Below, we have put the descriptions of the techniques next to the detailed examples.
The Yukari Royal measures 5 7/8" in length. This is a different size than the Yukari Emperor. This pen is superbly crafted.
Only 80 of these pens were hand crafted by the master Masato Sato. See his signature just below, right.
The techniques used in the crafting of this pen include Hira Maki-e in which gold powder is sprinkled onto lacquer, then polished. See the area above around the signature. Togidashi Maki-e technique is lacquer burnished to reveal the design beneath. This can be seen on the peony flower above where the red and green colors come through the gold.
The Raden mother of pearl technique is used for the eyes on the tail of the peacock.
These are inlaid pieces of abalone, embedded in the body of the pen to suggest the numerous blue and green eyespots on the cock's feathers.
Taka Maki-e technique reveals contour by building up areas into a high relief. See the pea hen above and the cock details below. The landscape above right is another example of Hira Maki-e.
Combining the peacock, the peony and the peahen in one composition is intended to assure good fortune. The Peacock in Buddhist culture brought forth rain and good health. It was believed to counteract poisons of all kinds. The peony is called the king of flowers in the East, where it is considered to be the supreme bloom.

The two-tone Yukari Royal nib also beautifully crafted. It comes with the finest converter that we have yet seen which holds more ink than any other converter on the market.

A Hakone wood mosaic box has been specially made for this series.
